Hurricane Irma set records before downgrading to a Category 2 with winds weakening to 100 mph when it crossed over the Tampa-St.Petersburg region. Before hitting Florida, it brutalized the Caribbean as a Category 5 and washed over the Florida Keys as a Category 4 hurricane.
As it moved north, Irma’s enormous size lashed Florida from coast to coast, stretching out an amazing 415 miles across, but it weakened Monday to a tropical storm with life-threatening storm surges, dangerous wind and heavy rains.
The once-Category 5 storm had lost some of its oomph approaching the U.S. mainland after running into the northern Cuba coast. Its winds dropped to a potent 115 mph when it made its second landfall on Marco Island, down from its 185 mph peak.
Overall, the storm submerged streets in Florida, caused power outages for millions and snapped huge construction cranes in Miami.
