It has been described as a searing of the soul, a rending of the heart. C. S. Lewis aptly called it a “problem.” And yet the Bible says that there is no such thing as a Christian without it.

Pain.

Perhaps the most difficult pain, Lewis addresses moreover, is the matter of emotional, or mental, pain: “Mental pain is less dramatic than physical pain, but it is more common and also more hard to bear. The frequent attempt to conceal mental pain increases the burden: it is easier to say “My tooth is aching” than to say “My heart is broken.”
